Nakusp Secondary School

About Us

Respect Matters

Nakusp Secondary School opened in 1957 and is one of six schools in School District 10, Arrow Lakes.  It has a current school population of 140 students and 25 staff members. Students come into Grade 8 from the elementary schools in Nakusp, Burton  & Edgewood.

NSS is very much at the heart of Nakusp’s community with generations in the village having passed through the hallways of the school. This means that the community is very generous in the time it gives to the school whether through coaching school teams, mentoring students in work placements, volunteering time in class, sharing expertise or attending monthly PAC meetings.

The NSS sports program is well regarded in the Kootenays. Teams are fielded each year in soccer, volleyball, basketball, golf, ski and snowboard, cross-country, and track and field.  Our teams often participate in provincial finals.

NSS continues to develop opportunities for students to learn in inquiry-based formats.  The goal is for learning to be personalized and based in place-consciousness.  For example, our Outdoor Education program challenges students to explore outdoor recreational opportunities and markets in our area.

Students at NSS have a broad choice of courses and opportunities throughout their high school years. With a small student body, we are able to cater to individual needs whether for students with a particular career in mind, for students who wish to attend an intense sporting program for several months, or for students who need additional support in their learning.

NSS is proud that the vast majority of students graduate each year and go on to attend post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, Alberta and the rest of Canada.
